About Philanthropy New Zealand

We are the peak body bringing together New Zealand's leading private philanthropists, trusts, foundations, businesses, and the community trusts created when community banks and energy utilities were sold.

Philanthropy New Zealand is primarily for organisations that give money. But we also encourage all Kiwis to think about their giving, their generosity.

We believe the way in which we carry out our philanthropy - whether we give money, time, or experience - can build social capital in our communities and will enrich Aotearoa New Zealand.

Philanthropy New Zealand supports and facilitates the exchange of information among philanthropists and grantmakers.

The diversity of our membership means large community trusts mix with businesses, with private foundations and with small family trusts. Each supporting, sharing and learning from the other.

We work to strengthen the sense of philanthropic giving both within New Zealand and globally. We are full participants in the global exchange, ensuring Philanthropy in New Zealand is visible on the world stage.

Our history

Established in 1990 by our patron Sir Roy McKenzie, our organisation was set up to provide support for philanthropists and grantmakers and to encourage philanthropy and generosity among New Zealanders.

We provide a number of services, from networking and advocacy through to professional development programmes and research.
